Candidates | Interview Advice

Having successfully negotiated the selection process you now have your opportunity to convince the interviewer that you are the best person for the job. At this point the interviewer is setting out to ascertain which candidate has the personal qualities, skills and abilities the company requires. The following information should help you do this.

Remember to remain calm and confident

The interviewer has read our notes, seen your CV & skills summary and now wants to get to know you.

Do your Research

We will always provide as much company information as possible to help you prepare for your interview and better understand the company and what they do, however, we always recommend gathering as much information about your prospective employer as possible before you are interviewed - what do they do, what are their current projects, which markets do they operate?. Most of this information can be obtained on their website and the internet.

Know your strengths and weaknesses

We all have weaknesses and, when asked, it is important to discuss your weaknesses in a manner which shows you have recognised them and are striving to overcome them. By turning your weaknesses into positive actions you are proving that you are committed to improving yourself on both personal and career basis.

PMA - Positive Mental Attitude

Be positive about yourself and your abilities without being big headed or arrogant. Approach each interview opportunity with the goal of receiving an offer. Only then will you perform to the very best of your ability.

Rehearse your answers

Interviews vary tremendously, from very informal to formal, however, most interviewers ask similar general questions in addition to those of a more technical nature. Your Abrecco consultant will advise you on what to expect. Some questions can be anticipated, as can the subject matter such as "why are you interested in this position?", "Tell me about your current position/working environment", "what aspects of your current job do you like/dislike most?" what are your strengths ?","What are your weaknesses?", "why do you think you are the right person for this position?" and "where do you see yourself in 5 years time?". If you are well prepared and know about the company and the demands of the position you have applied for these questions will not be a problem.

Remember

  • Speak clearly when answering questions.
  • Try to avoid yes or no answers.
  • Don't worry about pausing before you answer, it shows you think about what you are saying.
  • Admit when you don't know. This is better than waffling.
  • Be honest.
  • Always thank the interviewers for their time when you leave.

Prepare your questions

Finally, there is always the opportunity to ask questions at the end of your interview, after all this is a two way process, and you need to be sure you want to join them. When asking questions focus on issues which are important to you and show your interest in the company. Questions regarding Terms & Conditions and package will have been discussed with your Abrecco consultant and may be brought up at the interview for clarification/confirmation. We recommend that you write your questions down prior to the interview and take them with you.

On the day

Dress to Impress

Remember, first impressions are important. Prepare what you are going to wear in advance ensuring your clothes are clean and well pressed, your shoes are polished and your overall appearance is neat, tidy and professional.

Be Prepared

Be sure you know the time, date and location of the interview and the name and position of the person you are due to meet. Ensure you know the location of the office. Plan to get there around half an hour before the interview time in case of delays.

Have the telephone number of the company handy so that your can let them know if you are running late - this is more acceptable than just arriving late and making excuses, but can be avoided with preparation and planning.
